Abuelo Sergio

Abuelo Sergio Gaona Ortiz originally from Mexico City, comes from a Purepecha lineage, Abuelo Sergio has been running temazcallis (sweat lodges) for over 30 years, he learned about different sweat lodge practices coming from different native cultures (mexica, Lakota, purepecha, wixarika, etc) while traveling along the American continent, during his youth.

Abuelo Sergio has been working closely with the Wixarika culture for over 10 years, this culture is one of the only cultures in Mexico that keeps intact lots of ancient rituals and traditions. These traditions are thousands of years old, and most of them are related to nature and art (plants, elements, animals, sound, dance, etc). The Wixarika culture is considered as the most spiritual culture in the whole country, being the wixarikas some of the best artisans and artists in Mexico.

Nowadays Abuelo Sergio is involved in helping marginalized communities in different ways, from building low cost houses for them, to giving workshops and sharing ancient wisdom with the ones that are open to receive it.
